Yue Tang is Professor of Cello at Concordia University Irvine, California, and former Associate Principal Cellist of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra in Dublin, Ireland. He began his musical training at the prestigious Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he graduated with the institution’s highest student honor. During his studies, he performed extensively in major concert halls across Beijing, with appearances broadcast on China Central Radio and China Central Television. In 1996, he recorded his first CD with Ensemble Eclipse for the German label Wergo.

In 1997, Yue was awarded a full scholarship to study at the University of Southern California under Professor Eleanor Schoenfeld. He later transferred to the Oberlin Conservatory of Music to study with Professor Andor Toth Jr. At Oberlin, he served as Principal Cellist of the Oberlin Symphony Orchestra and received numerous accolades, including prizes from the Rio Hondo Young Musician Concerto Competition, Marina del Rey Concerto Competition, Chinese-American Showcase Competition, and Kingsville International Competition. In 2023, he was awarded the Gold Prize at the World Classical Music Awards and the Grand Prize at the Vienna International Music Competition, culminating in a winner’s concert at Vienna’s Musikverein.

Yue joined the Florida Philharmonic Orchestra in 2001, winning the national audition for Assistant Principal Cello in his second season and holding that position until the orchestra’s closure. He also performed regularly with the Palm Beach Opera, Atlantic Classical Orchestra, Miami City Ballet, and Symphony of the Americas. From 2004 to 2008, he served as Principal Cellist of the Ars Flores Symphony Orchestra and Co-Principal Cellist of the Boca Raton Philharmonic Symphonia.

In 2008, Yue was appointed Sub-Principal Cellist of the RTÉ Concert Orchestra. From 2015 to 2023, he served as Acting Section Leader, leading the cello section during the orchestra’s first China tour in 2017. In 2024, he was appointed Associate Principal Cellist. Over the course of his career, Yue has collaborated with distinguished artists including Mstislav Rostropovich, Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo, Kiri Te Kanawa, Lang Lang, Sir James Galway, Joseph Silverstein, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Zubin Mehta, Lalo Schifrin, John Williams, Karl Jenkins, Bryn Terfel, and Angela Gheorghiu.

Yue’s solo album, Variations on Cello (2012), was critically acclaimed and frequently featured on RTÉ Lyric FM. His television appearances include his role as a cello instructor on RTÉ One’s Instrumental (2012), solo performances on Dancing with the Stars (2019, 2023), and a featured appearance in Flora’s 2024 commercial Skip the Cow.

As a recording artist, his discography includes film scores for Albert Nobbs, Black 47, The Siege of Jadotville, and Room; television series such as The Walking Dead, Modern Love, and Instrumental; and albums including Irish Thunders, Korngold Violin Concerto (with John Wilson and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra), Paul Brady’s Mother and Son, Brian Byrne’s Golden Hair, Vincent Kennedy’s Music of People and Place (featuring his solo on Grá), Naoimh Penston’s No Fury (featured solo on Darling Man), Gavin Murphy’s Twilight, Keith Getty/Kristyn Getty”s Joy: An Irish Christmas and Christian Fambrough’s In the Quiet and Patiently Wait for You.
